CULTURE

Tanabata just happened a couple days ago on the 7th July in celebration of the 2 star- crossed lovers Orihime and Hikoboshi. It's one of the biggest national festivals in Japan so that means amazing decorations and celebrations all across the country including at Zojoji Temple in Tokyo. Being in Japan during Tanabata is definitely on my bucket list for sure!

Check out the pretty lights at Zojoji here!

FUN

Giant Robots. When I say that you probably think of Japan's long history of mecha anime (Eva, Gundam) and obsession with robots right? Well, American robot maker MegaBot recently challenged Japanese robot maker Suidobashi to a robot duel so expect to see an epic robot battle sometime in the near future! In the mean time, make sure to check out Japan's response to this challenge below!

USA vs Japan! Who do you think will win?

WTF

Move over Babymetal - there's a new kawaiicore band on the rise! Ladybaby is a new j-pop/ metal group that consists of 2 Japanese teenage girls and, wait for it... a bearded Australian cross-dressing wrestler who has been singing his way around Japan under the moniker Ladybeard. I'm not sure what it is about guys dressing up in maid outfits/serafuku that is intriguing but just watch the music video for Nippon Manju and you'll see why! Cue confusion.

So much hair and in all the wrong places D:

J-Movie Recommendation - Kami-sama no Iu Toori

A high school student named Shun Takahata (Fukushi Sota) lives an ordinary teenage life until one day a malevolent Daruma appears in front of his class and forces the students to participate in a series of children’s games such as “Daruma-san ga Koronda” with death as the penalty for losing. With no knowledge of who’s behind the games, he’s left with no other choice but to keep winning as his only means of protecting himself and his childhood friend, Ichika (Yamazaki Hirona). Meanwhile, a troubled classmate named Takeru (Kamiki Ryunosuke) seems to actually be relishing the opportunity to get other students killed. It's a straight forward 'survival of the fittest' setting where selected students progress onto their next round of 'trials' with a variety of God-like monsters (my personal favourites are the Kokeshi dolls and Maneki-neko). This movie is so interesting, though quite twisted and gory in some parts, but is exactly the type of movie you would expect from director Takashi Miike. The visual effects are probably the best part about this movie so check it out if you love a good Battle Royale type of movie!

Check out the trailer here

Until next time,

Vivian
